Sam writes poetry.
Jamal sketches elaborate drawings.
A well executed memorial for Tahj,
who died trying out for the basketball team.
They come to the church in droves
on Wednesday nights.
A refuge.
A place for food and drinks,
playing games, engaging in vigorous expression.
Gentle Sam told me about his writing.
I asked to see his work and he said, “yes mam.”
His eyes diverted to a boy
who was antagonizing his girl cousin.
The next day, Sam walked into a classroom,
beat the boy with his anger covered fear
and went to jail.
Sam came back to church on Wednesday.
I smiled and waved at him.
We didn’t need to talk.
He knew.
What will we do about Sam, Xavier, Jordan,
Shaneil and her baby?
We will hold and love their babies.
We will bring Pizza and more kids.
We will help with homework
and invite them to spend the night at our
homes.
We will shower them with hugs,
laugh, sing and dance.
And feed them with the Word.
there should be an abundance of such places. I'm glad you're making a difference where you are - and thanks so much for writing this one, which reminds us all we can be a part of the change we wish to see. Dawn
I am right there AGAIN in your rooted and grounded piece, Janet, and, apart from the excellent portrayals and emotionally satisfying details, I can so relate to the spirit of this write. Practical love and acceptance is everything; the Word and prayer the dynamic that keeps us all moving along in understanding, strength and support, and in the knowledge that there is a greater power at work in all of our lives who is well-able to make up for all of our lacks and shortcomings. Grace is one of the biggest needs of our world right now, I reckon. Pamela's so right - guess you receive double for whatever investment you are able to make. But the will and intention of this write is exemplary, humbling and very moving. The world is indeed made up of all us very needy individuals, and it takes a picture such as this to articulate the preciousness and uniqueness of each individual who goes to make up "the world". I applaud your individual efforts, Janet, but even more I applaud your gifting of being able to make such profound sense of the purpose of it with such a poignant scenario as this. Also, I am totally bowled over by the kindness and appreciation in your review on my page today and am humbled and touched by your thoughts. Bless you and thank you - and keep up the very great work which you are about. The line: "I asked to see his work and he said, "yes mam", somehow cuts me to the quick. Just beautiful. TY LOL Kate xx
What a lovely, caring piece of work Janet! There's a special reward in heaven for those who reach out to help those who need guidance and expressions of care and faith - - but I suspect that you feel you are rewarded right here on earth every time you are around these special kids. Well said......
