A Bowl of Sugar

Apparently we are having a nostalgic night this evening...

Poem Artwork

Did you ever have a bowl of sugar?

Not something mommy or daddy allowed,

Gave you the Fruit Loops or Snap, crackle and crispies so loud,

Expected of you to put them in a bowl & eat them,

Never did they think you would cover them in sugar,

But you felt, as this was your first bowl, so proud…

Mommy usually made it, pouring the milk ever so lovingly,

Sprinkling on the sugar, only just a few grains,

Swore to yourself you would not be so strained,

So this is your first bowl of cereal you’ve made,

All by yourself, now that you are in the first grade…

Daddy says with a big smile, “How about some cereal with your sugar?”

Mommy frowns and dumps the whole bowl in the sink,

Yep, gone in so much of a blink, your first attempt in the trash,

Funny how the memory works, I brought this up from my memory cache…

Poetry doesn't have to rhyme, but I think it should have a melody, and a rythm to it that does repeat. I love the story this tells, but as told, it loses impact because it leaves out the sounds, the colors, the flavors as the sugar pours on. Keep putting down the ideas, trying them on with different clothes, hanging them on the line to dry, then folding them neatly intio a story with the music of poetry.
