I seem to be in the landing pattern for Atlantic City (NJ) airport and hear these "wails" all day and all night...they are not bothersome, just sometimes rather lonely sounding...ed

Wail of the Lost…

From out of the heavens,

Beyond the dark clouds of storms,

A wail of a jet so high in the sky,

Like the cry of a child lost in the dark,

A sound so fearful as to evoke nightmares…

I realize what it is, this jet flying so high,

His engines do howl to stay in the sky,

But for those of us below, the sound is the lie,

Are they gaining altitude or coming back down their engines to belie…

Are they really lost or is it me?

In my mind is the ultimate key,

To the gate of the heavens,

A place of honest jubilee…

(((ed)))

i can see why you're concerned...but i'd much rather hear them flying than hear those awful "sounds of silence" when airflight was grounded after september 11...THAT was terrifying, indeed.

a sad write--effectively well written

(((HUGS))) and love, karla.

This is really a wonderful piece of writing, Ed... not only is it apparent that these sounds have absorbed into your psyche, causing some deep thought, but you have brought it effectively into expression that involves the reader. Well done! katy xox.

I think it is the sound of the engines that people remember hearing especially when there is a disaster. One night a low flying jet was very close to our house and the dogs wailed.

An eerie sound, indeed; as are whale wails. I have several whale wail recordings; and it's fascinating to watch my pets react to these whale calls.

You know I flew on a an old DC10 at night once, many eons ago, and I was quite sure that the tail or something was coming adrift, the plane just vibrated and carried on in the darkness the whole way, what a yuk flight that was. But still, a more haunting sound for me, was the old steam trains in the night, aaaaaaaaaaaah shudder shudder.
Stewth, Im showing my age LOL. Most creative and intriguing ED.
Hey when Rufuz howls at the moon, is it as eeeerie LOL

It's the wing/aerofoil, with speed less drag on top, more pressure underneath then the plane can take off/stay up. Easy huh.

I know the whining sound you speak of and it is a kind of haunting
lonely sound. This is a very creative poem Ed, superbly written!

I know what you mean Ed
I used to live under the landing pattern of Newark
and on rare occasions, they used to really fly low.
I sort of miss that now,
was interesting looking at mutitonage planes
landing and taking off
wondering what really kept them in the sky. ......Lol

Ed, there is so much truth to this statement...so much truth.

Yes I know the sound you speak of. I often look into the sky right now as planes fly by and wonder where they have come from and where they are going. My gypsy blood is starting Spring Fever early :-)

I love the sound of jets, but the whining sounds can be rather haunting. I live near an Air Force Base, now, and the Fighters take a low pass right over my house as they are zipping up into the sky...it is really neat to watch them...now the AWACS are another story, they go up much slower and rattle everything and are soooo loud, but still, they are amazing aircraft to watch. I have Sealths going over often too, now that is a bit of a thrill, since you hear nothing, then, when they are right over you, this louder than loud sound traveling so fast it echoes for what seems like an eternity. For me, there is just something thrilling about the sound of jets.
Take care,
Sherry
