I wrote this during my senior year of high school and it remains my favorite. I am considering writing a short story based on this poem.
A Return To Love
He sits by the window and stares blankly into the vast expansion of night.
A dog howls somewhere in the darkness,
echoing the painful sound of his heart crying out.
He looks for an object to focus on but only sees brick and pavement.
The alley is an endless land of filth; a representation of the people that reside by it.
each piece of broken glass he sees glistening on the ground reminds him of each broken dream that had somehow eluded him.
He once believed.
He was once somebody, a man.
He stood tall and walked with pride in his step.
She was by his side.
Through all the destruction and filth that surrounded him; he found beauty.
She was no ordinary lady.
She shined brightly like a glistening diamond.
She shined too brightly; her beauty disabled her to hide from the darkness of man.
He could not protect her.
He could only cry as they held his hands behind his back and forced him to watch the terror.
As she cried out in pain and horror, he prayed that she could find peace in Heaven.
He stands on the ledge outside his window,
above the dirty alley where all of his dreams were shattered.
He stares up into the vast expansion of night and sees her face shining in the stars.
“I’m coming to you”, he promises as he jumps to reach her.
