Keeping Our Word

Tardily answering my phone
the answering machine
speaks
so we wait for me to hush
You kid about my voice
in two places
Our talk takes a few paths
zipping here there everywhere
small talk
today's doings
religion even
your kids my kids
future things
For whatever time
we span the miles
separating
two who care
brashly interrupted
by a long loud tone
My god - the answering machine
every word recorded
So I promise that
on long lonely nights
I will invite you in
and play you

Mahalo Bill,
I loved it, you bring out wonderful thoughts about things---I wouldn't have imagined how a machine can be more than the obvious.

Aloha,
Myles

I confess to hiding behind my answer phone... For an incurable gasbag, I am actually phone-phobic... Too many years at it's continual beck and call! Great commentary on today's most intimate relationship... that of whispering down the wires. Let the voicemail do the talking! :)) Incisive and captivating work, as always. Love the down-to-earth nature of this one. You have an eye and an ear for these things. TY Kate xx

Thank God for answering machines. LOL. What would we do without them? This is a very good poem of subtle romance, that on a lonely day you play her words to feel warm inside. Well written, Bill, and thank you for sharing.

May the Lord Jesus bless you, and those whom you love, and be with you always, and at your side constantly. With much love in my heart, joy to the world, peace on earth, & ((((((((((MANY WONDERFUL SISTERLY HUGGGGSSSS)))))))))), sister Barbie

I love the way this poem ends...poignant and sweetly endearing...) A shared conversation on a long lonely night.. just to hear another voice. I do understand it well...

I understand this amazing poem, I have kept all the tapes from my answering machine but no longer use the machine, maybe I will want to play them back some day. Well done Bill, waves of love }}}}}}}}}}} Barbara

In my book this is a gem. The way it's written evokes the sense of a conversation or message zipping around. Although I'm a fan of answering machines since I've never liked talking on the phone, it's an effective, emotional picture of how impersonal technology can make our lives if we let it. JM

This shows the importance of a relationship that isn't hampered by the outside and can be given room to grow. Love,
Susan

Bill,
I'm thinking about getting rid of my cell phone too.
Nothing seems that immediate anymore......

Bill, about five years ago I ditched my answering machine and I haven't missed it one bit. I enjoy your pen each and every time.

Got to go, phones ringing
Thanks,
Dan
