poems printed in black
help bring written words to life
for those with weak eyes
Leaving The Nest
Turning the corner
at nineteen
your decision
alters lives
Irreversible after
you two
create
expectancy
Hurried events
for another
family
of new needs
Love stretches
as choices
leave a nest
already empty
I recall when I left home at the tender age of sixteen...marrying the love of my life, the boy next door...my mom knew she might as well give consent...we were determined. We had known each other all our lives, were friends and then began dating, my family grew up with his family, my grandparents grew up with his grandparents, so he wasn't a stranger. We lived close to both his parents and my mom...I finished school, while he was working. I couldn't understand the grief that my mother felt, not until my first born married at the tender age of nineteen! But the good news is that I am still married to the love of my life, we have grandchildren, our families are still good friends, we all go to church together and live within a few miles of each other, my son and his wife are still married and happy! Great write, allowed me a trip down memory lane...enjoyed!

I remember leaving home when I was 19, and had been working for a while until I had enough to find my own place. My first apartment was a one room studio, and it was a good thing I knew how to cook. LOL. Thank you Bill for sharing this with us.

There's something very unsettling about birds who are scatty and messy when it comes to nest-building... it seems to ruffle our feathers of inner peace and propriety, as if a forewarning of ill-abode. This is a great and concise write in which your few choice words and metaphor, coupled with the "twiggy" style all adds to that feeling of "not quite right" and "not as it should be"... either that or I've got a clothes label scratching the back of my neck! :)) Well done, Bill. Can soooooooooo relate to this, sadly. TY Kate xx
The 'nest' needs time to gather its bedding.. the foundation to hold its fledglings. Sometimes the buidling is too hurried and the 'nest' never holds what it should.. Great analogy, my friend!
Using Calgary as a backdrop the author satirizes the self-serving nature of the public as it continues to fatten itself, not only physically, but egotistically as well.
