Andy Griffith - One Of Life's Highlights

Many of us have met someone famous, and
those who haven't should feel no loss.
Years ago, I was privileged to
meet Andy Griffith, the one called, "Andy"
in a later TV series of whopping success.
He was known for a funny monologue recording,
"What It Was, Was Football."
We engaged him to do his act at a dinner, and
paid him $300, which included his travel.
Andy was a delightful jester for my kids as
we delivered him to his hotel. .
They knew the words, and he made them real for
the three of us... laughing all the way.
His evening performance won him more friends,
beginning at a small reception of VIPs earlier.
We heard that he hoped to read soon for
a television drama part, but he wasn't
confident about getting the part, saying,
"They want a man six foot, two inches, and
I'm only six feet, even."
Someone said quickly, "Andy, don't
tell them that; the shock of hair on top is
at least two more inches!"
I still hear his eyebrow lifter, "Ya' reckin?"
The rest is entertainment history, but
after he began a Broadway run of,
"No Time for Sergeants," he remembered
to call, promising two tickets at the box office,
when I could get into New York.
I did see the show many months later, but
Andy had moved on to Hollywood.
There was no e-mail back then, but
our infrequent mail was treasured for awhile..
He lives near Wilmington, NC, with
a disease which keeps him in constant pain.
There should be some way to give back to
Andy Griffith some of the cheer he gave us.
