LANDGIRLS

An English summer landscape
Nature's green-flecked shag pile
scattered with Friesian
black and white jigsaw pieces

Warm, hay-scented tableau
Big bovine bodies contentedly
chewing gummy grasses
The idle legless staring vacant
and soporific out of glassy ox-eyed orbs

Struggling gate-legged at tea-time
nose-to-tail procession homeward
Ponderous udders, teats leaking
generously yielding life's precious dew

* * * *

Cows don't do winter
They are perennial little piebald 'n's
on a bed of evergreen

Outside, the air cauterises nasal passages
but cows indoors blast sweet, warm, milky breaths
from wide-bore nostrils

They trail sustaining smells from their unwiped feet
Pureed earth milled through a thousand seasons
A muddy fondant, bitter sweet

Thanks, Michelle... no, it is amazing that poetry can inspire so many different responses in each individual person and will always be interpreted uniquely - that's its beauty, I suppose!! When I chose this title, I actually meant no true parallels with the wonderful ladies who go by that name, but rather soley intended it as referring to the cows themselves - but with the slant of the whole picture being a slight retrospective, nostalgic view. The second part I wrote about six months ago and that was titled "Winter Cows" then!! By the way, Andy's comment cracked me up completely! What a wag!!

You really brought this to life, I was smelling cows and hearing them while reading this wonderful, well-written poem. I admit that I didn't see what Bill saw in it, but I like that you tied history/landgirls into this write.

This poem dearest Lady is a tableau vivant inside of me. I remember each turn of a phrase and feel sohorific; like walking in a dream.
To me dear one this poem is a fondant ... but not a bitter sweet one ... but one that opens up a world of mystery and intrigue. What seems to me would be an ordianary pleasure, now becomes so important that I read each unfamiliar word you write like I am seeking the key to the Kingdom of Heaven. Whatever you write is masterful. But I await what is to come; as you delve into the mysteries of your life and heart. I know you won't disappoint me. You can't do that. It would be contrary to your nature. In closing all I can say is" "Moo moo moo" Hugs xx Bill

You are the creme de la creme in imagery, Kate girl.
This poem is no exception. You can even make cows look
good...with your well-turned phrases.

I want to go to England!

Cows don't do winter

Maybe these landgirls are actually smarter than we are!

Really enjoyed this slice of the rural English countryside, Kate.
