When Toy Soldiers Were Heroes

grew up on war stories
of the glory gore wars
wooden toy rifles
rocks our grenades
kill us some krauts
bayonet wounded japs
heroes in short pants
marched in solemn parades
then came the teen years Vietnam and the Kennedys youth’s innocence lost Martin Luther had a dream
our hair grew long
for peace candles lit
time took a generation's toll joining the executive team
Well Felix, as children my brothers always played with toy soldiers and my four sons, it never turned them bad, but in todays world where there is so much violence we tend to shy away from the innocent toys of the past. Thank you for this poetry, it sure hits the heart.

Powerful lines throughout, Fee! "When Toy Soldiers Were Heroes", Times have certainly changed.

Powerful offering Felix..but I must admit..collecting those toy soldiers became a hobby to me at a certain age...I collected them all...and so did my boys...and I could play with them for hours in the sand!!
Toy soldiers are still a very big part of todays youth, whether it be the real ones, or in a video game, etc... They intrigue the miind of a boy, and girl who then, eventually might play the real games, to protect what he stands for, in hoping, maybe I will live on to enjoy what it was I fought for all these years!
As I read your poem, my two little ones, Abbey and Joey, were playing on the floor, no soldiers, just mind play, He yelled out, "Mayday! Mayday!" I had to stop and see what was going on, my daughter was doing the belly crawl and he was making believe he was rescuing her from the imaginary danger...Toy soldiers or not, we will fend...

I'd be a monkey's grandmother if i let my kids exercise war games at all now, and even worse with computers, it's called " forget it" there's enuff bloodshed on the news to pollute the mind, let alone anything else...Great write Fee..Well done
