The Devil’s Pride
That night even the shadows spoke in whispers
Even the full moon hid in dark of cloud
For that night belonged to the other side
When the devil called his minions long and loud
The foul stench of hell felt like sulfur’s smell
While all the raw demon’s night-spells cast
Now the hour of midnight fast approaches
All Hallowed night disturbs sanctity of past
Hushed little children cowered in their beds
Their parents hid behind locked doors in fright
Rosary beads prayed to things best left unsaid
Oh ‘twas foul deeds ahead for sure that night
Outside, one youth walked the streets to fulfill
A bravado boast he’d made in light of day
Afraid he hurried homeward in nerves scraped raw
Of the price that too late he knew he’d have to pay
Past town square where once men hung to die
Their souls in the vapor mist seem to appear
Then past the place where a murder took place
He pulled his coat collar a little tighter out of fear
So close to his home and warmth of hearth
Hope stirred but still one more path to take
Through the gates of tombstone’s inventory
That may have been the young mans grave mistake
His screams echoed off the cringing coward’s souls
He begged and pleaded for Christian doors to open wide
Ah but their fear was strong that hellish night
They ignored his pleas and Satan smiled with pride!
