Old Parchment Paper

Dried stains of remorse on old parchment paper
Black ink faded to gray like the memory itself
Found it tucked in the back of an old family bible
Bitter treasure of sadness on an old dusty shelf
It said: Please forgive me, I’ve done you wrong”
You deserve better so I have to move on”
His old hands trembled, and then quivering sighed
He went on reading, between the tears she had cried
“I’ll love you for ever, but I can’t live with my sin
Not sure where I’m going, but I know where I’ve been”
He remembered her sadness on those last few days
He knew she tried hard to tell him in so many ways
“I hoped someday you’d forgive, we’d find a new start
but to forgive isn’t easy, if it’s not in your heart”
He thought of her smile, the soft touch of her hand
It all came back the things he didn’t understand
“This letter must serve, as my last good bye to you
find the love you deserve, one who’ll always be true ”
Thirty years he had pined for the love of his life
He never remarried for he loved only his wife
Now he kisses the letter, whispers I’ll join you dear
Thirty years and a lifetime, it’s just been too lonely down here

I would have preferred that they had done it face to face and not when an enemy bullet kind of "found" its target.
