The Condemned
By: Felix Perry
The shadows close in on his misery
The darkness embraces his sin
The rain devours his last teardrops
Invoking what should not have been
He gathers round him his cloak of intentions
Thick lined with good deeds left undone
Then pulls up his collar of invincibility
Sadly stares at the last fading rays of the sun
While the hangman carries a red rose
As the judge hides in his chambers alone
The condemned man smiles facing eternity
For the sins of the forgotten unknown
The Duchess of Death’s in seclusion
Her caste chastity belt had one fatal flaw
He might have escaped tainted judgement
But the Judge sold controlling interest in law
Lace curtains conceal pain of the drum roll
To the gallows below stray sorrowful eyes
He winks at the cruel joke of her hypocrisy
That she sold him on a platter of sweet lies.

Excellent wording in this poem! I especially like the second verse. You captured an intense feeling that can be applied to many historic periods. The picture is every bit as ominous as your words!

I can hear the drum-roll. It's a good thing the old ways have vanished, at least it gives some half a chance. Blessings Always, paul.

Such well-sketched hypocrisy, shown not told, as the condemned man dies a textbook death, victim of some dust-ridden legislation overtaken by rampant society social mores. You are a master of the poetic ballad. Excellent stuff here! Kate xx
Powerfully penned write of justice in the olden times...we've gotten more permissive, haven't we? Well done.
