Have you ever come across a deserted graveyard and wondered of it's history and past and felt an almost sense of belonging...

The Bone-yard

bury me in the bone-yard by the riverside

where the mourning fogs permanently reside

lost in time is its bleak unconsecrated name

matters not, who cares, not they who’ve died

there the sun feels is an unwelcome intruder

banished, forgotten names on tombstones hide

abandoned chapel ruins of false idols reach

in faint supplication to some false idol’s pride

sumac and weeds are roses on the death beds

richly fertilized by tainted salt teardrop cried

‘tis in this place my soul will find contentment

no longer burdened by grief mankind lived and lied

It was news not long ago of a town about to dig up and rebuild on an old cemetary because the last burial was at least 100 years ago. Since no one is left alive to complain (close family), they are able to do it. Seems unfair. Your poem reminds me of that sense of forgotten lives. Very nice, Fee. Love and Hugs,
Sheila

A few I have walked through in upstate New York that has graves dating to the mid 1600's. Many hessian troop, British troops, Dutch residence, Continental troops through to the present. Just seems such a shame that the "dash" between birth and death holds the essence of the life. Am happy to see you back on the den. How's Santa doing?

Be always safe,
Karen

Fee, I truly dislike thinking about, talking about or walking through cemeteries. I’ve got lots of people residing in them and I visit when I can, but it still gives me the creeps. That said, however, this is very nicely done. Thanks Dick

There is one forgotten cemetary in the pine barrens that goes back to the early 1800's that I really enjoy looking through...the state has brought it "back" to life, as it were, cleaning it and fixing the headstones where they can...e
