A Halloween Story
By: Fee
“Come gather round my wee hobbit friends
Aye, ‘twas indeed a dark and dreary night
The kind of night that frightened fay of heart
Although, I’m told it is truly a witch’s delight”
Wind howled through town like banshees deprived of souls
Lighting, like stage lights flashed baring imagined entities
Graveyard tombstones became hiding places for the damned
Bat’s eyes glowed red hanging overhead from leafless trees
You see, it was All Hallows Eve in the year of our Lord 1964
Children’s laughter and shrieks up and down the block
Gathering treats from every door, that is except for one
That place, run down, windows boarded up, door with a lock
You see some say it was haunted, haunted by the ghosts
Ghosts of kids foolish enough to have held a bag out there
Still, there is always that one boy or girl who defies fright
That night, it was young Abbie McPhee who ignored her fear
A rusted black iron fence and twisted gate groaned as she went through
She drew nearer as a sudden shifting fog arose like a veil
Shivering Abbie had to force one foot ahead of the other
She saw a piece of sign nailed to the door by a rusted nail
“Come right in, we have candy for all the little ones inside…if you dare!!!
She turned the knob and hesitantly, crossed the threshold
Her friends on the street shrieked for her to come back
The door slammed behind Abbie, cutting off the screams
Her friends screaming, ran for home, dropping their sack
A few moments later the door opened and Abbie and her big brother Felix came out
Giggling with their friend’s bags of treats over their shoulder
They headed home, little devilish grins on their faces
Knowing they would tell this story as they grew older and older…

Abbi and big brother Felix the crafty ones!
a plan perfectly executed, and not a drop of Bat’s blood spilt!
You gotta love their scheming and bagging the booty!
Great Halloween story!

We lived in a changing old neighborhood. Our house was a decaying Victorian. The streets were rather dark and there weren't many trick-or-treaters like us. Many homes were dark so we didn't knock. For the couple of years that we did, once with our cousin from a small town where he couldn't gather a large bag of candy like us.
There was this one, one-story house with a gable in the front and a small window above the porch that seemed not to have a window, but just a black hole. When we approached the building, someone up there in that attic or upstairs room would call out in a deep voice, "Ooooh," over and over again as if to scare us. We just laughed at the fool up there thinking that he could scare us.
