There was the war in which I finally realized Was a hazard to our lives When you don’t watch that black and white TV You miss out on what is going on in the world There was this thing called The Draft… Some young men ran to sign up while others ran away Those that ran did not always get out of the country, Imprisonment for them was the punishment Some made it to Canada where they were safe, But they lived poor Their families were devastated that they ran from duty Some family members even committed suicide They were shamed by their children’s actions. Many that really wanted to go had many physical problems They were not selected to go Anger grew among them Now we had a new set of Out -Laws 1969 was not such a good year Unless you did not watch the black and white TV And you spent all your time wrapped in a book
Three of my uncles went to vietnam, one died of cancer related to the war and another is dying. I was too young to see the actual war, but I'm old enough now to see the lingering effects. I say a prayer for our soldiers of all wars each day. It really does effect so many in very lasting ways...
