Smells Like Fish Salmon migratory journey Born into a woman's open sea Returning to the river of her birth Migration triggered by hormonal changes **** Woman's migration modifies Metabolism to create a need first for salt water Then for fresh water again Time to spawn **** Woman navigates by Sun Until she enters familiar coastal waters Using phenomenal sense of smell to locate Precise river of birth. **** Women's annual superabundance Make them totemic species Representing death and rebirth Fecundity, courage, purposeful wisdom and foresight **** Pairs of leaping women Transformed into salmon Dance beneath the waves Giving headwaters **** Women and salmon A delicacy to be eaten as sacred life-giver Divine transformation and migration of her soul Linking fish with the idea of liberty or escape Copyright 2006 Sage Sweetwater, firebrand lesbian novelist
