A great reminder of my college days in an ecumenical group led by Rev. John (forgot his last name), our campus minister, who also ministered more at a college 30 miles away, where he lived, doing double duty for the Methodist Church. Our group included Protestant denominations like Presbyterian, Unitarian, Episcopalian and United Church of Christ. But John came from somewhere else. He was very large and had a face that indicated some foreign origin.

John led us in civil rights activity and we sang all the songs. But he sang Amen in a booming voice that is hard for me to forget after all these years. What an inspiration that was to those of us with weak voices but strong hearts fighting to free Blacks being held in Jim Crow politics in the South. Maybe we need to sing those songs again, to remind everyone that color matters little when it comes to strength of character.
