Sliding into drifts of sand
That lags me into dune and heat
A heart so damaged it barely thuds
Just limping slowly without fire

The living part survives just barely
Clinging on dry cliffs despairing
Overhanging space and time
clawing upwards inch by inch

God, I cry, why must I try,
So hard to reach the glowing sun?
Is there reward for this survival
Somewhere for this wretched girl?

I strive and hope for spirit water
With thirst for more and more
Yet days pass without redemption
Just sands of time drifting down

The desert saps this life’s dear juices
Parched soul and heart, exist on hopes
No food or drink that quenches longings
And hope is dying cell by cell

Such risk of going forward thirsty
But turning back is surely death
So risk or not my feet keep lifting
I reach for bluer, moister skies

This spirit aches for loving souls
Who share the laden table’s dishes
And those who lift the cup of friendship
And toast the day with passions kiss

So step by burdened step I go
With my last strength I trudge
And reach with trembling fingers bold
For life’s rewards of gold
