The damage done by careless words And thoughtless acts that turn trust to dust Remain inside the heart and mind A long time, such a long time Each word is now suspicious Each act manipulation Guarded hearts reject the warmth Of even harmless attentions How long the healing process takes How lonely that wounded heart Gated, locked, shut off from life Hiding from a war that�s over

Oh how your words ring true, Sandi. There are many who can relate, including me. You've described so well how it is with verbal abuse. With physical abuse, the abuser can see the wounds and they eventually heal and are gone. With verbal abuse, the wounds are all on the inside, hidden, yet they hurt even worse because the mind replays them again and again. Excellent poem, my friend.
