This poem is based on a real conversation, between Winston Churchhill, and his nephew, upon the nephews graduation from Eton, and what he might do with his life. I've made it between a retired Irish sea captain and his son, who like the story upon which it's based, is ready to start his own life. This is one I've made into a song, I sing it in a heavy brougue and to a lively festive, beat, in The key of A major. Art
*Then what willya do?* *A lively, Irrish,* *Ditty* *Now I'm grrown up, I'll sail the seas,* *for a time I'll join the crrew.* *I'll work, I'll watch, I'll learn the rropes,* *I'll know just what to do.* *Then my own ship, I'll build or buy;* *When all my drrreams, come trrue* *Aye, lad, a plan it sounds ye've got, a plan so smarrt so trrue* *But son, therre's some things you've left out. Cause then what willya do, son?* *Then what willya do?* *Oh yes, me Da. I plum forrgot; a wife ,* *some kids, and a home* *I'll likely ,have.* *I'll be be a loving carring husband,* *and a fine daddy too.* *Aye son, a plan ye've got,* *a dandy, yes* *it's trrue* *But lad, I have to ask again:* *Then what will you do? Well Da, I don't know what you mean,* *I'll sail the seas, I'll build a home,* *a wife and children too.* *Oh grrandkids, I'll eventually have,* *won't that be fun?* *to whatch them learn:* *to talk, and walk, and rrun?* *Aye, son, ye've taken your life,* *a way down the rroad,* *and the storry becomes you.* *But my dearr son, I must ask again:* *Then what willya do lad,* *Then what willya do?* *Da, I can't think of one morre thing.* *I'd live my life, and trry,* *to be a lot, like you.* *I'd have some lows, I'd have some highs,* *I'd live my life;* *And then:* *I'd die* *My son, ye've said the word, I wanted you to to say.* *Cause my question werren't about:* *the worrld, and all it's ways.* *You'll die my son, that's surrely trrue,* *And now I ask you, prrecious lad.
