Idol Worship

Now is your opportunity,
to seek fortune and fame.
All you have to do,
is run the Idol gauntlet game.

You don't have to have talent.
you don't have to know how to sing.
All you have to do is show up,
your ego attitude to bring.

Smooch up to Paula,
Weather Simon's sting.
Let old Randy do the dog,
and jump into the ring.

It helps to be sexy,
it helps to be smart.
Others try to go to Hollywood,
only with their art.

You have to sing a cappella,
and still carry a tune.
Forgetting the words won't save you,
if you're pitchy before noon.

Some are there for real,
with voices smooth as silk.
Some are there for five minutes of fame,
a very annoying ilk.

Following in Hung's footsteps,
fool after fool appear.
All hoping, hope against hope.
It will be their Idol year.

I pray for prescreening,
to throw the nut cases out.
So I can hear real singing,
what American Idol is all about.

Amen, Ron!!! I type and send an Idol report to Dana, every week. The audition shows drive me crazy. I cannot stand the "made for ratings" whining, yet we still tune in, week after week. You should send this to Dana & Marc!

Great job!!!

I've never watched the show, I don't do much television, but I had a six year old student a couple of years ago asked me if I thought he should try to get on American Idol...what does that say for the show, or maybe I should say the six year old's parents, or maybe the six year old?
Enjoyed this write even though I've never watched the show...

Fortunately I am never home at night till late, still on the road, so I don't get to see all these new shows...Idol does not sound too interesting to me anyway, and this poem proves to me just how little I am missing...Ed

LOL, Ron!! I refuse to watch that show since hearing Simon speak on Leno one night about how it was all just a bunch of crap...rarely any real talent, and that is what the show is all about. Get people to pick a favorite then tune in to each show to root that person on. It is staged as much as it is not which didn't please me to learn. Reality TV??? I truly doubt it, but it certainly seems to captivate an audience. Love the poem.
Take care,
Sherry

I had to smile reading this, we say we want the "real talent", but without the others the show might be a bit drab.

The nut cases make the show..
They make me laugh out loud..
I love the show for sure.....
Also, Prison Break, Lost, CSI Las Vegas,
NCIS, and Ugly Betty. I know you don't care,
but I told you anyhow..

Really Ron, if they prescreened and threw out the nutcases half the viewing audience would vanish. American Idol was a good concept in the beginning that got as perverted and political as the American viewing public. I will admit though that I adore Carrie Underwood.

I too long for the purity of God given talent to emerge in a respectable way, and also be given an honest chance to flourish. It just doesn't sell though, controversy, and running the gamut of emotions sells.

It's probably why poetry has been relegated to living under rocks in this modern world. Seems only poets enjoy poets anymore.

never watch the show but it obviously has mass appeal ... as far as the poem goes, you certainly have brought out the truth of the matter ... i guess the nuts boost the ratings ...

Interesting read. I hated that show, I was invited on it once though after a karaoke contest I won. I just wanted the cash though so I gave them back their tickets.
I don't like being critiqued on something so rediculous. Talent is just that, it's not a honed skill, it's not practiced. It's nothing really to be proud of, it's just something you can do or you can't. Besides, being ostrisized for being ugly or overwieght is sick and predudicial and has no baring on the voice, stage presence, or the ability to make people happy.
With that said, I agree with you all you have to do is show up, look good and kiss ass. Everyone will love you. It's sad that that's what it takes to win a VOICE contest.
Great Read!
