I had this crazy dream the other night, added a little wordplay, and just thought of the ending double twist this morning. Make of it what you wish, but it's basically nonsense fantasy.

Nightmare with Guts

She woke up in a pasture,

outside her protective tall walls.

Topped with razor wire,

couldn't keep out the calls.

Wolves howling in the distance,

but clearly coming her way.

She contemplated her options,

she was sure she couldn't stay.

As an Olympian jumper,

she thought about the top.

Wasn't sure she could make it,

couldn't do the Fosbury Flop.

Had cleared that height before,

but the razor wire was more,

with the cuts that it would score,

might match what wolves tore.

She planned her route carefully,

and started out with a slow trot.

Away from the wall just far enough,

to give it all that she's got.

Running with all of her might,

with the moon shining on the wall,

there was no turning back now,

she launched, giving it her all.

She didn't feel the blade rip,

cleared and prepared to land.

Her adrenaline eliminated pain,

but her death was close at hand.

From within the gut pile,

bloody little head uncovered.

A filly rose on shaky legs,

the farmer soon discovered.

I enjoy your "nonsense fantasy" and the dreams and such that give birth to such imagination. All the best, Ron.

This is probably your best ever. I don't read much anymore, but when the first line gets you, it is usually good. Loved it.

There really were no options available. Wolves were howling in the distance. Adrenaline had taken over. She had to do something. Even though she was an animal with a high level of intelligence, she failed to calculate correctly in order to clear both wall and wire. When I saw the picture itself, I knew it would be an exciting tale. I was taken back to 1965-66, when I was enclosed by concertina for a year in the military. However, my experience was for safety rather than freedom.

Ron, I didn't quit know what to make of your poem but at the end the quote from Patrick Henry came to me, "Give me liberty or give me death."
There is no joy in bondage and better not to exist at all within it.

Yes, a tale that holds you to the very last word…
Unusual but compelling…

What a spell biding poem. You know it is good when you are drawn in and it will not let you go until the end. Well done my friend.

Very compelling use of razor wire and that which might resemble a female's task of birthing. Here, you've given us plenty of room to assimilate the message, especially the subtext that hovers over an even broader perception of the images you chose to dramatize, e.g., the obstacles and potential stoppage of achievements that ask that there be conscious attention to the risks. Liked this a lot, Ron.
