I reside with 3 dogs, a lab and 2 golden retrievers. They let me pay the bills...

Oh and a three-dog night is a term used in Australia meaning a very cold night.

New Year: 2010

My doorbell rang
It was the middle of the night
I had been sleeping
My three dogs snuggled in tight

The ringing persisted
My dogs crouched and growled
Surprised at their menacing response
Upon the door I did pounce

There stood a figure in a long cloak all in black
His face shrouded eerily by a hood
A scythed staff scared the dogs back
He pointed a bony finger down the road

He spoke, “Your new year awaits. It is full of death.”
His statement shocking, I held my breath
The cold wind chilled as it blew
Awakening me to what I already knew

“God gives us choices all along our way.
And thank you very much but I’ll be guided by his way.
Each day is a new beginning
And the future, you won’t be predicting.”

I slammed and locked the door shut
Still shaken by the man who woke me up
Back in bed ready for sleep, three dogs in tight
After all, it was very cold. It was a three-dog night.

Great allegory in sending the Devil on his way in favor of following God, Liz, a perceptive view of life even if you are sleeping with dogs. Just for saying that, I'll have to see if my bed partner kicks her hind leg when I scratch her belly. ...Jerry

You sound like me, Elizabeth; I always end up protecting my dog, instead of her protecting me! It's amazing how the tigress fires into action when anyone comes threatening hearth and home. But I like your attitude and agree with you about the source of power: no cold-caller is gonna get the better of YOU! :)) Love the magic realism in this and the strongly metred writing. xx

The first Harry Potter film had 3 dogs or was it a 3 headed dog.
Indeed, indeed, stuff the nay sayers and those whom are negative, stick with our lord and a good doggie nights. Labbys are the bestest. I've had two. xx
