The Tipping Point

Imagine what would happen if global warming becomes the greatest contributor to global warming. How could this happen? Add this to my apocalyptic series. (I changed the title from "Dreadful Dawn" to "The Tipping Point." Under either title this is hard to contemplate.

Poem Artwork

Boy scout with bow in hand,
Twirls stick in woody recipient,
Friction induced calories remand
To raise temps, the boy’s intent.

Dry tender awaits phase transition,
High temps drive gas from cellulose,
Begins spontaneous chain of ignition,
Heating flammables that juxtapose.

Hot flames, virally contagious,
Drive gas from adjacent fuel supply,
Contagion grows rampageous,
And flame breeds flame in reply.

Positive feedback actuated —
Self-sustained, will multiply.
Chain reaction goes unabated,
While fuel’s in supply,

So what of global warming case,
How can chain reaction work,
Become earth’s runaway furnace,
Oven of hot gaseous murk?

High temps cause earth’s lands
To lose CO2 — invisible trail.
Thirty percent, as it now stands,
Soil’s gift to air cocktail.

Ice has some peculiarities —
White is great reflective tool,
With insulation, has similarities,
Oceans, polar caps keep cool.

Due to latent heat, caps stay,
Expectation is thirty years.
But hardness rots slowly away
‘Til phase change nears,

Absorb heat slowly — then
Quick, water — sea green,
That absorbs heat. — Of a sudden,
For rays a sponge, not a screen.

Permafrost is melting fast,
Both methane and CO2 eject.
Methane’s twenty times as vast,
As CO2’‘s greenhouse effect.

Most ominous of environ heaters,
Lies beneath ocean floors,
Methane hydrate — world beater,
Dwarfs our coal and oil stores.

Ten trillion tons, waiting to erupt,
Needs little heat to release,
Methane gas, bubbling, abrupt,
Multiplies greenhouse increase.

Fifty millennia ago, last release,
Great extinctions ensued,
Caused many species to cease,
As atmosphere, gas accrued.

Earth heats, driving gasses out,
Makes greenhouse more efficient,
Ever hotter earth, brings about
Global warming — self-sufficient,

That now needs no human aid.
Will hordes meet dreadful dawn
After positive feedback escalade?
Will gas win and life be gone?

This is harsh but reality demands that we pay attention and DO something about it. Thank you for this reality check, Leland. Love and peace to you,

Frightful, indeed, LeLand. So what do we do? Dance on ground still cool enough to support our soles?

A somber and sober poem of warning, excellently crafted, and scary as hell. Thank you for all you are doing to make a difference - a Herculean labor.

The Earth was destroyed once by flood. They (science) say the next time it will be with fire. Believe it, with the constant rising of temperatures, draught ... scary to contmeplate. Very well penned.

Reminds me of my poem, Dinosaur Dawn. A likely scenario if we, as a world, don't come to grips with our fears and superstitions and make some hard choices now.

I heard that the Chinese are planning to turn off air pollution for the Olympics. Wouldn't it be nice if they turned it off permanently and we gave up SUVs for electric rides?

Will gas win and life be gone?

A scenario that seems extremely likely, these days, my friend, unless we kill ourselves off first. By 2050, over 9 billion humans scrambling all about for food, shelter, fresh water, and the all mighty oil fix - so they can fill their gas guzzlers as they desperately search for things they need to survive a day or two longer, and God Help the fellow human they find that has a few of the things they need.

In either scenario, I'm glad I'll be long gone.
