She was a sixth grade pal of mine
Her braid reached to her fanny
She stood up straight all the time
Lived with her parents, brother and granny
In an upstairs apartment, they did their thing
From the Ukraine they came originally
Handmade stitchery, homemade everything
You might call them the real deal
But this early a.m. I think of her
And wonder what has become, of that
Girl who never cut her hair
Or let her posture rest, or humor come undone
Is she happy, alive, at peace, you know
Did her rigid upbringing give her
The necessary skills to be of aid
And is her hair still in that fat braid
i had a friend like this in the fourth grade. you made me think of her again and i haven't in years
