Night Sweats

Inspired by one of those nights when you feel like you're on a roller coaster ride...

Night Sweats

They leave as quickly as they arrive…

Unexpected and at the most inconvenient time…

Sometimes I think I must be the hottest person alive!

Amazing how one’s temperature can turn on a dime.

They come by day but more abundantly by night…

That’s when the stripping and fanning begin…

Throwing the covers back…what a sight!

My husband fighting to keep the blankets up, but I am the one who wins?

Feeling as though at any moment I could ignite like a match…

No other place on earth could be this hot…

Maybe an incubator waiting for eggs to hatch!

I feel like I am Queen of the Sahara…only I’m not!

Then the sweats, those terrible night sweats, sweat, sweat, sweat…

Hot then cold…it’s a regular roller coater ride…

Men have no clue…this is a sure to win bet!

Not only by night, by day in the middle of a crowd, with no place to hide!

How does one win this battle of heat?

One hot flash after the other…

I may as well face it…I’ve been beat!

And the worst part of all…I now sound just like my mother!

Joyce,
Wow, I hate to say it, but the first thought that came to mind was a miserable and uncreative "been there, done that!"
I started to feel it while I was reading your poem. Too descriptive! ;o)

Good read,

Joyce, I loved this poem. If only a man could walk in a womans shoes for a week of hot sweats being ready to blow in a second. I would love to see that one. Bravo! A terrific write, this one.

You go girl! What an exact discription of those day/night sweats! I'm a joke at work cause I have my fan on during winter (now) and my husband can have the covers. When we first married, he use to freeze me out. Lately I've been able to freeze him out! Sweet revenge; I think not! It's nothing on earth like being that hot!
Way to go! And it does sound like mom! ha!

This was very interesting, Joyce.

My supervisor was telling me too about a play that she went to see some weeks ago in the theatre here in Toronto. It was entirely focusing on menopaus. The show has 4 main characters, each holding different position in the society, all are facing life's changes, and yes the hot flashes do come and go. They have made a comedy play out of this and people who can relate to all these changes love the show. They all had a good laugh.

However, I wasn't paying to much attention, so I don't know the name of the show, or the actors that my supervisor was talking about, but she said the show was hilarious.

I guess, with the ever-changing in our lives, we can always look at the comical side effects of it.

Love your write. Take care!

I love the fact that you used RED ink here! Night sweats are the worst part of men-oh-pause I think. That's why it is called menopause, we are so sweaty and irritable, men have to pause before they speak to us, I get so hot that I could take 10 cold showers a day and come out sweating! My sister says it last for around 5 to 10 years, I am over the 10 year mark and they still come, not as often and not as severe as they used too. Thank God! Feel for ya, Joyce. Hang in there, it can't last forever, I hope!!

It's humorous, alright--to read, that is! Anyone who has ever been there will sympathize completely. You've taken a good approach, I must say. Laugh and the world laughs with you. Cry, and even your face will be wet, like the sweat.
Oh, dry up, Joyce! and may it be sooner rather than later.

Let me tell ya! If all us female folks could manage to bottle all this un-wanted heat...we could start our own form of global warming! When it first starts, your wondering what alien snatched your body, and then by mid-misery, your looking for any possible way to find and keep your humor...must be where we are, because I like you found this hilarious,,,well..in a odd sort of way anyway.
Keep up the laughs Joyce..those of us out here need all the funnies we can get!
Thanks for sharing!

"Night Sweats"
Joyce, I like this poem.
I know exactly what you mean. Burning up like the Sahara...we have separate covers, folding the main heavy one down at the foot. As a matter of fact no use in trying to think about using the heavy cover for bed...tisk, tisk the poor husbands.

Heee, heee, heee~thank you for sharing this poem,
