Poem Artwork

I sometimes forget
How blessed I am,
How easy I have it
Compared to so many.
Then I am reminded
By an article
About those who arrived
With little more
Than the clothes
On their backs,
Refugees who have known
Ungodly horror
And spirit-debilitating repression
In their homelands,
Who saw America
As a place
Where they could safely
Live their lives
And pursue their dreams.
So they risk everything,
Including those very lives,
To come here
To this country
Where freedom has already
Been paid in blood
By the warriors who lay
Sleeping eternally
In military cemetaries
Across this land
And on foreign soil.
The refugees are grateful
For the price they paid
And honor their sacrifice
By working hard
And succeeding
Against incalculable odds.
Would it not be
A grand thing
If those who were born here
Would only show them
The same depth
Of honor?
