Poem Artwork

On this Christmas Eve
Snowflakes mingle on the night air
With the scent of the woodsmoke
Wreathing from my stone chimney;
All is quiet,
All is calm.
A single electric candle
Shines forth a welcome
From each window
Of my small cabin
And my tree twinkles
Before the big bay window
Now glistening with frost
In the muted moonlight.
A string of cars
Make their way
Up my driveway
And,
After parking alongside
My own,
They disgorge the occupents,
Dressed
In their heaviest winter gear.
Curious,
I open the door
To find friends standing
Upon my porch
With happy smiles
A guitar and a poinsettia,
And before I can speak
They begin to sing
"O Little Town of Bethlehem"
In voices clear and strong.
Tears fill my eyes
As I wrap my arms
About my waist,
Charmed and humbled
By this unexpected choir.
Four more carols
Do they sing,
Ending with "Silent Night,"
Their breaths rising
Like the smoke from
My chimney,
Before wishing me
A Merry Christmas
And leaving me holding
The crimson poinsettia
To continue on their way.
