I'm taking a solitary drive
Through
The surrounding neighborhoods,
Enjoying
The many expressions
Of yuletide joy
Written out
In thousands of lights
While listening to
An endless fount
Of Christmas music
Pouring from
The car speakers.
I remember years ago
When my parents
Would take us
On similar excursions,
Traveling slowly
From house to house,
Our excitement growing
As each proved
Ever more festive
Than the last
Until, at last,
We returned,
Happily exhausted,
To our own home
With its simple lighted nativity
In the front yard.
When I was a child my parents
always took the lighted tour
of all the homes who partook
in the festivities with
decorated yards... I loved this
time of year that heightened the joy
My parents also decorated quite
elaborately covering our lawn with
rolls of fiberglass snow and erecting
a giant snowman the height of our home
and reindeer in the yard with many colored
lights... thank you for taking me down
memory lane :)
A short story of mine was included in an anthology of short fiction by fourteen of Port Town Publishing Company's authors. It is out of print and no longer available except as a download. Contact me at charlenetess@yahoo.com if you want it.
