Only A Nightmare

The storm approaches
on anvil-black heels, twisting
her skirts about her;
birds clot beneath a
sulpherous sky; fields flicker
with unholy light.
Lightning pulses to
a frenetic beat, rhythm
out-of-sync with mine;
the howling curses
of thunder expand to fear
inducing levels ...

pulled from the deep breath
of sleep, I wake into the
safety of the bed ------
only a nightmare
as the heat continues its
monotonous grip.

Goodness dear Karla - this was as powerful an image as I've ever seen you write. I almost fell off my chair. Brava Poet.

Give that monotonous grip several tongue lashings, perhaps then it will relinquish its hold on the weather.
