History is being lost: those that fought
for the stars & stripes are dying in record
numbers. No Wall records their memories,
no memorial lists their names: only yellowed
bits & pieces of stories remain, passed down
from father to daughter.
ii.
I remember Daddy talking about the war, but
can't remember what he said.
iii.
I asked him, Are we related to anyone famous?
He said, Your Uncle Duke was a survivor of the
Bataan Death March. There's your hero. Uncle
Andrew (we called him Duke) was a POW for
1,224 days. When liberated, he weighed eighty
two pounds (on a six foot two inch frame).
iv.
How I was to know? He never talked about it.
v.
Fragments of tales told of battles on the ground
& in the air float in the fog of my mind. Part of
the puzzle is missing: why won't it come together?
It's as if their history stopped with me & it shames
that I've forgotten. I wish I had written it down so
their service wasn't in vain.
vi.
I followed in their footsteps, joined the service.
vii.
I've forgotten mine. No Wall records my memories,
no memorial lists my name: only yellowed bits &
pieces of stories linger, to be forgotten when I die.
No son to pass what I remember on to; no legacy
to carry on. Just a dog tag for someone to find
someday & wonder whose it was ...
viii.
... & what it would say if it could talk.

just give me my dog tags and the ol' glory and I'll be ok.
Well here you have started to create a wonderful history for your family.
Those that were there don't talk, and if they do, is to talk of their buddies, the real heroes.
No one likes go picking in their scars trying to remember what's under.
You r topic is one I never thought of, and maybe you can send it to someone you know is a writer and interested in military affairs. It's something that should be looked into. Excellent writing Karla!
Your uncle Duke's story would have been priceless. I talked to my uncle Ed a year ago. He served in the Air Force from 1940 until he retired a Major 20 years later. He told me the whole time during World War II he never saw action although he was posted in several places in the United States during the war. He was a consultant in Saigon just before he retired. He is still quite lucid although forgetful. He announced to me in a recent e-mail that he is now 90.
I've written my autobiography detailing my wars with my paralysis and other people's perception of liability after paralysis. You should write down those bits and pieces. You'll be surprised at how much you remember once you start writing. There are other relatives in your family who will benefit from reading them.
Karla your words are going to speak for generations to come, and the stories that seem forgotten will one day come to light, I am reminded of my uncle and his silence about Vietnam and both of My Grandfathers in World War Two

Oh no, there is no shame. One cannot remember all the stories that have been handed down. I found through the years that most do not want to talk about the horrors they saw and some endured. My grandfather, WWI veteran spoke very little, yet I could see the pain in his eyes. My father too was the same way and I have never been able to even find out which battle ship he was assigned to. My first husband is a Viet Nam Veteran and never uttered a word of what he endured or saw. Robert's father is the same way. Even when asked, he just turns away, like he does not want to remember, yet he cannot forget. You, through your writing do justice to all. No words never need to be spoken to be honored for such a sacriice....
Karla, they have a monument here in Capas Tarlac, for those in the death march at Bataan - and their names are written on the wall and in the hearts of our countrymen. We salute you all as soldiers of the world! Great title - dog tags. Greater poem.
the stories are endless Karla -- and most will unfortunately be lost to history -- but history will also note that the the soul of America is the countless number of brave men and women hat sacrificed their all to defend freedom's call -- Happy Easter -- peace and love -- Jon Michael
This is powerfully penned, Karla.
Now that my mom is gone, I realize there were so many stories that I wished I had written down...so much information that I wish I still had, to pass down & to utilize...
Karla, history is not being lost as long as there are those who care, as you do. God bless our veterans and men and women in service, and God bless you! Side note...very interesting style on this one
Karla -- yes it is such a shame that history is being lost ... down scraps of paper. One of my passions is family history and genealogy. Unfortunately, this passion did not strike me until after my grandparents, dad and three of his brothers passed. But I've managed to search and find some interesting records. Have you ever done a genealogy search on your uncle? If not, I'd be willing to try -- ancestry.com does have some military records on file -- my library subscribes so I can do it at no cost -- and I'd feel as if I was giving tribute to one of your heroes. Contact me at swilliams1200.comcast.net if I can help.
It is such a shame that veterans are being forgotten -- we've lived in peace (despite the fighting we have been involved in) ... but peace in that most people do not know anyone who is currently serving in the military. So these soldiers are taken for granted and so are their sacrifices. Susan Williams
I agree with Richard completely so don't need to write it again, but remember this, heroes may go unnoticed and trampled under foot here, but in the everlasting Kingdom your reward will be noted and lauded for all to know. It was never in vain. Bless you, J'nia
Every thought you've had, and every word you've ever spoken, or written, has been recorded in an everlasting library. Someday those vast books will be opened and we will all give an account of our days on this planet. You, and what you've accomplished, dear Karla, will never be forgotten.
Blessings ...
This hits very hard for people that are now studying their genealogy. I so wished I had listened to my grandparents and the stories they told, but I was a child and didn't care. I have stories gathered from cousins and some old pictures I have from Mom, but the missing puzzle, will it ever be as one?
God bless our veterans, and let's give ALL of them the honor and respect they're due! EXCELLENT write, Karla, and thank YOU for YOUR service to our country! God bless you! Well done!
