Henry Allingham, of Great Britain, died today. He was one of a handful of World War I Veterans left.

just a teenaged lad when you joined
the military and went off to war: an
original member of the RAF (formed
in 1918), you kept flimsy planes
airworthy, survived wounds received
in battle, and always, always honored
those who serve(d), especially those
few who gave all they had so that we
could have a better world to live in.
A lone bugler plays for you as you
join Heaven's ranks of men who have
already known Hell on earth: one of
the last remaining World War One

Wow... I salute those who fought for freedoms clear back then, and those who fought again in World War II. Those were different times and war was so different then. The apathy that now affects us is something that we need to battle today. Maybe then our war heroes from the Korean & Vietnam wars and the Gulf wars and the current wars in Iraq and Afghanistan would be recognized...

A touching write my friend, I watched this on the news and brought tears to my eyes. You've paid a wonderful tribute to him, his services deserve to be reocognized with such inspiring words as yours. Too many today have forgotten our men/women of service and often don't give them a second thought...I wonder where we would be without them...or would we be????

BRILLIANT, Karla, thank you! He sounded a great bloke - the nursing home he shared spoke so highly of his strong spirit and fun-loving nature. When asked what he would most like to be remembered for, he said something like: "Aw, don't remember ME!!! Remember all my comrades who paid the ultimate price way back in 1918... THEY'RE the ones you should be remembering!" And you do, Karla... often. Thank you and thank you again... 113!!!!!!!!!! He must have been indestructible!! :)) xx
