jagged lightning splits
angry, bruised black skies,
the clouds shattered by
shock waves of thunder-
sound...very intense

the warning sirens
sound...the noise chills my
blood...fear grips my heart...
CAN'T REMEMBER WHAT
I'M SUPPOSED TO DO

strobe flashes of light
illuminates the
fear on my face...of
knowing the massive
storm IS STALKING ME

i know the roar of
rainfall mixed with hail
hides the screaming of
a tornado...i
imagine the worst

all i can do is
hide in the shelter
of a downstairs room
(central location)...
i pray it's enough

the power dies...i'm
sure i'll be next...i'm
afraid...the thunder
outside absorbs the
thunder of my heart

i am shaking scared...
panic overtakes
my mind WHAT WAS THAT???
breathing is ragged...
must calm down BUT HOW??

sweat runs down my face...
feel like i'm gonna
throw up...feel stupid...
'cause no one else acts
like this when it storms

more time between the
flash of lighning &
sound of thunder...rain
seems to be easing...
winds are not as strong...

the storm loses its
intensity...THANK
GOD i've survived...it's
over...until the
next severe storm comes.
-----------------------------------------------------------
ever since i was a little girl, i have
been terrified of thunderstorms. and
since i moved to texas twenty years a-
go, the fear has intensified. level
red as far as the fear factor.

springtime in texas ushers in severe
weather season (although severe weath-
er can...and often does!...strike at
any time).

i know...i've been in three tornadoes.
the last one i was in, in 1996, ripped
off my roof.

guess i wouldn't be so scared if they
built basements (or at least, cellars)
around here. nooooooo...that would be
too easy.

i am a classic storm phobic. the mere
mention of severe weather is enough to
send me into panic mode. i monitor my
weather radio constantly (at night, i
sleep with the thing set to "alert
standby"--the sucker goes off, i'm go-
ing to know it...my neighbors will, as
well...that sound is LOUD), and tune
my t.v. to the weather channel for up-
dates on the radar (which was is the
storm headed, and is it heading this
way??).

i've always acted like this...i hate
storms with all that is in within me.
if i had the money, i'd move to some-
place that doesn't have much in the
way of severe weather. that's not to
say it couldn't happen, but i would be
able to have a normal LIFE and not
worry so much...

Karla my wife is afraid of storms also. She hides in the closet. I guess if we lived where you live we would have to move also.
Always remember this: everyone has some type of fear in them. The world is full of scarey things. The way in which you manage your fear makes you the person your are. I chose to not live in fear everyday of my life. This is one thing you can do to help face your fear of storms. When there isn't one just clear your mind of the thought and enjoy each and every second of your comfort. When a storm shows up, then pray and do what you have to do. Think about this, in some parts of the world people are constantly being killed and exposed to things like earthquakes. On this one occasion I heard that almost a whole town was destroyed by a quake. some people didn't even wake up the next day because their house fell in on them. Now focus back to your problem and try to enjoy not being in one of these locations. Every second of joy counts so don't waste a second not trying to be happy or thinking happy. tkcare Grady

`Karla I on the other hand love rain, storms too, as long as they are not tornadoes..I feel like the earth is getting washed, and I love the smell of rain..Its wind I dont like..this was very visual and for a rain lover..well..I think I will go read it again. LOL..sorry you fear them..just keep your head down, stay inside, it gets over soon enough...Floria

This is a terrible fear [phobia ?]
Have you tried to find out where it originates in your mind? Usually it is displaced somewhat from what the actual fear manifestation is.
You need to move, girl.

this is probably among my very favorite of the many poems you have written (and all are terrific; but then, i am NOT prejudiced! HA!! :) ). it is a very image-filled, intense write that certainly does capture your fear and what you experience during severe weather. It also captures the drama of the storm itself, and just reading it causes my heart to race like a cheetah, like the opening stanza. "Jagged lightning splits angry, bruised-black skies". POWER in that statement alone! WOW!! :0 i wish we had basements there, too; i'd be joining you in the hopes of escaping the monster storm that is ragin' outside! i'd feel a heck of a lot SAFER, for one thing! (HA!) :)
Incredible dramatic write; so good this is! love it so much! love, your twin, karen lynn. ((((HUGS)))) :) p.s.: ANYONE know WHERE we can find a BASEMENT to hide in around burleson or the dallas/fort worth metroplex???? :)
