~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Looking down the highway
I can see your car disappear into the sunset
Widening the gap
Between my heart and your head
So much happens so quickly
So little can be learned
When misjudgment sways emotion
When moods fall prey to their own conclusions
Like a bridge about to fall
Like a jet with stalled engines
All that is left is the twisted steel of pain
Right and wrong are no longer applicable
When dreams become the dust of speeding tires
When the wind has a sorrowful odor
And wrangled thoughts are left to fester
Like a rotting wreck left by the side of a road
Yet, as I turn back to take a last glimpse
Of a dusk never to be forgotten
I can see in the distance
The miracle of shiny chrome
Jude,
A moving, powerfully penned piece; excellent!
Only thing: In the title, do you mean "SHINY"? To "shinny" means to climb up something (of course, you knew that)
Otherwise, that was the only discordant note in a perfect write
(((HUGS))) and love, Karla. :)
Yo - ACE !!!
Well done! Clicked on "Gold Members" tab - scrolled down, observing WHO had WHAT numbers of REVIEWS - YOU ACED IT - with over 2,000 !!! Must be a good reason? So, I clicked on reviews, read some, and came here to see WHY! RELATING LOVE, or the loss thereof, to one's favorite car, or BABY, '57 Chevie, or whatever - BOTTOM LINE? It always HURTS!
Reminds me of ole Will Shakespeare's "Parting is such sweet, sweet sorrow!" ALSO, words from Marc Antony's solioquay "... the evil is oft interred with their bones - the good lives after them - so let it be with Caesar!" Somehow, the HEART just won't let the HEAD forget the GOOD times, and we ask, plead, nay - BEG - for a second chance to be HURT again!!! EROS must be satisfied! NEXT !
Guess it's just a human THANG, huh? Tom.
"Widening the gap
Between my heart and your head..."
This is what I'm talking about, Jude... we all understand that concept, but it leaves us baffled to put it into words. That's where you come in. Bingo! I can nearly hear the arrow whizzing past my ears to the bullseye when you express such human, yet, often illusive responses. Your writing is often so personal, yet you should see all the heads nodding out here... and wishing they'd thought of your words. katy xox
When it comes to love break ups could be bridged on through mutual understanding and renewed trust. Very powerful poetry. So moving so touching.
did you write this? really? I get it! I get it! I get it! And I didn't have to read it four times or squint or call myself stupid for taking so long to halfway get it. oh, but maybe I shouldn't be so excited that I get it, huh? I much prefer to be in the driver's seat, but life's forced me to look at the shiny chrome until I nearly choke on its miracle... and wake up and see me standing there going blind... enjoyed, related and, having seen the miracle of shiny chrome, I'm movin' on. There isn't much I could add to all of the comments
you have already recieved, so just gonna say
I know that highway well, actually I know several of those
highways! Though I have to admit, none of them had
an ending/beginning like this one. Great work!
It is interesting how relationships keep changing as the observations change as well. What is lost can never be found again, but what changes can always give rebirth :-)
You have incorporated the two elements that we so often use to place things in a time frame...the car and the lover. This is a bit of a different write from you, Robert, a little more earthbound than most. It is one that many of us will relate to, that is for sure; who hasn't watched a relationship end as we were left behind with a smoking exhaust pipe as our final image. Will she come back? If she does come back, will it be to run away again as soon as your heart has healed from this time? I have learned that once they leave without intent of returning, it is best, for me, not to rekindle the relationship. Some form of trust gets fatally damaged in that leaving and my experience has been that I was the one still feeling the love and they were simply along for the ride. The "you'll do until something better comes along" situation seemed to prevail for them or for me. The glimmer of hope in the ending of this poem seems bittersweet to me, having been both the driver and the one watching the car drive away, but perhaps I am reading too much of my personal experience into your poetry. Excellent write, you certainly have everyone relating to this situation in one way or another.
Take care,
Sherry
... either that, or the beauty of Venus appearing as the first light in the nightsky! This is uncanny; I have been toying with dragging out an old, jokey write about being left in the afterburn of a friend's sportscar myself, with just the retiring, two-fingered salute of the twin-carbs in my face!! :)) On the other hand, yet another timely warning to me that people say I drive too fast; I've a tiger in my tank, a black-dog on my shoulder and the angel in the rear-view mirror telling me: "Hey, slow down, Hon! You ain't immortal... yet..." This has nothing to do with the intention of your poem, but words that are inspired can have multiple applications and, like dreams, are definitely imbued with "living message". Anyway, I like the precision and sharpness of this poem; it's steely clarity which cuts to the chase like surgery. On the other hand, there is the softened and hopeful upturn at the end which speaks of enduring optimism. Methinks this chick will be back!! If she's the sassy, city-type taken off at top speed, she'll realise she's forgotten her lip gloss in about a mile... screech of brakes and sudden U-turn; BUT, if she's the beach-babe trundling off in the flower-power, beaten-out VW camper, if surf's up it could take quite a while!! (And, in that case, she'll probably have Ed M and Rufuz with her!) Guess I've just got that Friday feelin... don't you just love the humorists?! I'm sure Dream Scene (j) will provide a fix for this and have you jumpin for joy in no time!! :)) LOL Kamikaze Kate xx
the love is not one of balance.
I can sure understand this one Robert, why is it the most painful breakups are always the ones in which the ones we love drive, walk, fly, race, sail whatever into the future and leave us standing holding on to some vague hopes. You aced this one bud, well written.
She's a beauty, Jude. Silver-shine in the fading sunset, turning to the faint glow of a star. Eternal. You can still feel the heat coming up from the asphalt. The white line stretches your dream through time. We all follow it and collide with the reality of what is...
