On this cold night I built a fire
So you could warm up your hands

We watched the flames grow
As the fire exhaled sparks into the air
Like dancing stars superimposed on a crisp and blackened sky

And we observed the smoke curl up before our eyes
Forming phantom images

Mesmerizing our gaze
While importing our smiles into each other’s hearts

Our voices gelled our minds
Melting away
Any distance between us

You said this miniature blaze reminded you
Of the time when you were caught up in a humongous forest fire

And how the flames just passed by you as if you weren’t there
And all that remained were burned out tree skeletons
Howling across the sky

And you recalled how the lightning spawned
Electric fingers dancing across the sky

And the smoke rose into the air
As the darkened temperament of nature’s capricious character

And you remembered, how strange it was
That all you could think of was being by the shore
Looking for me to sail in safely on the waves

Now all that matters is we are warm on this beach
As I smolder your fears with a lifeline kiss
