It’s time to tune the piano

The melody it once inspired
Is playing a silent symphony

Its distant movement, a bit off-key

Its soundboard quieted
By the staccato of forgotten dreams

Strings rusting
In the humidity of an unfilled room

The windows are closed and covered
By drapes faded and discolored
By a sun itching to come in

Dust muffles a dormant timbre
Listlessly dancing in the space
Of once proud and illustrative tones

Its time to tune the piano

Its contours, still sharpened and honed
Are begging for an opus to be played

Resurrecting its resonance
Returning its polished life

See sharp sea shells by the sea shore. Step sure or searing slits snare.

And then there was that long neglected piano, dying to see the light of day and play, once again. Beautiful!

Beautiful bodywork here, Jude! :)) Can quite see your mirrored reflection in that polished casework. Rather than piano strings, my mind was somehow working on the taut string of a bow... guess that's the love metaphor that Susan in particular has picked up on. You don't often write in such concrete, quiet and paced terms - the repetition of the single line is very effective here - but when you do the controlled power is immense. Like your choice of "timbre" over "tones", too. Brings out the idea of deep resonance, the multi-layering of the write which creates ripples... rather like the vibrations of the strings you allude to. Very nice. I like! :)) LOL Kate xx

Still kicking myself for quitting piano lessons after ten years and a teacher I couldn't stand....life is like that, isn't it? Always room for second chances and dusting!

I read this the first time through as if I were the piano and the second in the plural, as in "we" or society. either way, it is extraordinarily beautiful and stirs my soul or takes it to a whole new key, so to speak. your vision combined with precise writing always helps me to see sharp, Jude. thanks and many more fine compositions to you, Dawn

The metaphor of the piano as ones own life was exceptional Jude.

I agree - there are those times when we must open all the drawers, and doors, and pull all the furniture off the wall, and do a thorough cleaning and re-structuring.

I personally do this twice a year, and have for the last thirty. Something miraculous happens when things are cleaned and tuned and put back in order. Something miraculous indeed! And I agree with Peter, our lives are a work in progress and must be carefully tended!

Very insightful write ...

I too see a metaphor in this wonderful poem. I've missed reading your work Jude. I'm afraid that my reviews are sporadic at best. I always try to catch up when I do have a block of time. I see that I need to do quite a bit of catch up on your den.
