Holy Cowboys & Dirt Devils

the cowboys whirl into town
a little cow town
just for a blow
and some Joe
telling tall tales
in the early morning light
the horses tied outside
to the hitching post
alongside the cafe

the cowboys herd the cattle
rounding up strays
the cow dogs run ahead
waiting for commands
the breeze kicks up
blowing dirt
they pull up their kerchiefs

the sun is hot overhead
mirages appear
water or merely dust
the doggies bawling
as we herd them home
a long hard ride
cowboys need some rest
cottonwoods up ahead
water is near

as the twilight approaches
the sun turns red
the cowboys near the ranch
whoop and holler
get along little doggie

after Cookies slop
they board their pickups
whirl into town
a beer might wash it down
or bit of whiskey
cowboys shove quarters
into the pinball machines
listen to music
playing on the Wurlitzer

those dirty cowboys
a rag tag bunch
gambling on pool
the big money in the back
on Aces, Kings & Queens
they're all Jack of Hearts
losing their paychecks

the cowboys wishing for pretty girls
only place was 60 miles away
dance halls, whore houses
wishing for some Lady Luck
Ah Hell!...

the cowboys head for the ranch
drunker than skunks
some Joe to sober up
head to the bunk beds
dreaming of horses,
wild critters & endless prairie
