A sad tale from Virginia
Two lovers about to be wed
How was the groom ever to know
That they would never share a bed

Now let me tell you what happened
The bride fell ill then she was gone
His loss left him broken hearted
He was alone and so forelorn

Day after day, night after night
He cried and cried for his lost love
He wouldn't accept the cruel fact
As he prayed to Heaven above

That they would be reunited
That she had never gone away
And so obsessed he had become
He simply lost his mind one day

They buried her near Dismal Swamp
A few short days after she died
His mind gone, he couldn't think straight
He thought her family had lied

He believed they sent her away
Out tothe swamp by Drummond's Pond
But he would go to her rescue
This thought allowed him to move on

So into the swamp he stumbled
In search of his beautiful bride
When on the surface of the pond
Came the glow of a firefly

"My love!" he cried, "I see your light
I'll reach you no matter the cost"
He then built a raft of branches
To float out to the girl he'd lost

But when he had almost reached her
A sudden wind blew from the sky
Creating waves that tipped the raft
He fell into the murk with a cry

Yes, the groom drowned that fateful night
In its murky waters he died
But alas, as the story goes
He was united with his bride

So, if you should visit Dismal Swamp
You may see this man with his love
True love can never be denied
It's God's greatest gift from above.
