A slight variation of Chapter 44 from MYSTERIOUS TRAILS OF AMERICAN FOLKLORE.

Back in Nineteen Seventy Six
A policeman sighted this thing
What looked like a very large bird
Had a twelve foot span wing to wing

Then just a few minutes later
A second cop spotted it too
A black silhouette that glided
Like it had nothing better to do

Then a bit later in Brownsville
A civilian saw it again
The monstrous bird was in his yard
Quickly he called this sighting in

And the sightings didn't end there
Two sisters saw it by a pond
The thing had the face of a bat
Folks asked them what drugs they were on

Yet still the sightings continued
Various calls with different views
A reward for its capture was made
Big bird even made national news

Then soon it was identified
A Pterosaur is what they said
Extinct for sixty five million years
How do they fly after they're dead?

Now interestingly enough
Fossils of these things have been found
Deep down in the heart of Texas
I guess all those reports were sound

Still, could it have been a Thunderbird?
The great, big bird of Indian lore
Many explanations abound
Some say it was just a condor

So, next time you're down in Texas
Raise your head and look to the sky
If you see this large, flying beast
Call it right in and don't be shy

I love your folklore poems, another great read, I have to say when reading the title I too pictured big bird from sesame street, now that would be a sighting. God bless. Baz
