I fashioned this tale from a story of folklore that S. E. Schlosser told about two men from Yuma who were returning from their search for Pegleg's long lost gold mine. It's a variation of the tale in my book, MYSTERIOUS TRAILS OF AMERICAN FOLKLORE. Hope you enjoy and may God bless.
A skeleton haunts a desert
Well, that's what all witnesses say
Been seen only stalking the night
Never once seen during the day
It could be the Spirit of Death
Looking for someone late at night
Or maybe the Keeper of Fire
Twice seen holding a lantern's light
Two miners had once spotted it
"A horrible sight," both had said
"A terrible thing, nine feet tall"
They both thought that they'd end up dead
But the thing simply ignored them
It didn't want them in the least
They grabbed their gear and hightailed it out
Hopped a stage and headed back east
So who's to say where it comes from
Or if it's even real at all
You can choose to find out yourself
You be the one to make the call
Camp out in that desert one night
Set up your tent and wait awhile
Pray that you see nothing at all
But be prepared to see something vile
;-)
