In the little school where I was a first grader, the Christmas program was over and there was a knock at the door. Little Larry was asked to see who was there. What a thrill!
I’d been in school for only three months
In a one room country school
Light snow covered the wintry ground
And the weather was very cool
The Christmas program was being held
Each student shared a poem or song
Because the enrollment was up that year
The program went very long
When the last recitation was complete
And the teacher took the floor
To thank everyone for being there
We heard a knock at the door
The teacher looked puzzled at this sound
And she looked right back toward me
“Larry, would you go to the door
And see who that could be?”
Honored, I went to the front door
When I opened it I gave pause
And turned and in the loudest voice
And shouted loud, “It’s Santa Claus!”
When thing were over some of us kids
When outside to check out the facts
There was proof right there in the snow
We could see those reindeer and sleigh tracks.
I hope little Larry keeps that vision in his memory forever, For I believe there is a Santa in every town. He is the one who helps make sure there is food on the table or cloths on the backs or a roof over the heads for those who are in need. Thank you Larry for sharing.
I'm not sure I'd have been able to "announce" Santa Clause because I'd have probably either fallen faint or have the 'cat cut my tongue.' That has to be one of the best memories EVER!
