Nativity -- The Carpenter

Series looks at the young man who made the manger for the baby Jesus and then some strange turns happen.

I had just begun to work with wood
The manger I made was pretty good.
There were flaws in a place or two
but for a barn this would have to do.
The straw covered every mistake
and pressure didn’t make it shake.
I barely finished this first task
when I heard a strange couple ask
if they could come and spend the night
I he told them it was alright.
I took my tools so I could leave.
I guess I must have been so naïve.
I didn’t ask why they were there
and why he gave her special care
Quickly I learned the reason why
when that baby began to cry.
I watched as they lovingly laid
him in that manger I had made.
Years had passed since that special night
that brought my heart such great delight
and I was ordered by my boss
to use my skills to make a cross.
I didn’t know whom it was for
when I took it out of the door
and placed it on the shoulder of
that one whose life brought so much love

The straws of that long ago manger didn't cover his pain at the realization of the wood coming through his hand would be the crib and the grave.

Again, the circle of life from beginning to end for Jesus and the carpenter. This one makes me sad, but reminds me that what I do always impacts someone else.

God bless you. Kathy
