Forgotten Names

As a pastor, I have met people for almost 50 years and they are scattered all around. When I run into one of them, they expect me to remember their name. This is my result.

I see your face and you know me.
I tell you I’m glad you came.
You say, “Well, thank you, Larry!”
But I can’t recall your name.

I meet so many people.
They seem to come and go.
And so does my memory
with those I ought to know.

Sometimes I just say vague things
hoping you’ll give it away.
But when you don’t drop a clue
I don’t know what to say.

I thought I’d use a little trick
with one good old guy.
I didn’t know his name was “Hill”.
I asked if it’s with an “e” or “i”?

I met a man whose name was “Butts”.
I’d tried to keep that in my mind
until I introduced him
as my friend Mr. “Behind.”

I’ve tried about everything
in person or by the phones.
I asked one how he spelled his name
and all he said was “It’s Jones!”

Hey Larry we all go through this too. Hubby has been Military all his life and we have lived from one end of Canada to the other meeting a lot of folks over the years. Faces I recall but names forget it, I think we should all have to wear a name tag from the day we are born, lol. Thank you for sharing.

Dear Larry, I think you are not alone, but maybe yes, to write such a nice poem with humor. Bravo, my friend, God Bless you. Love Emile

You are a very busy man, trying to save souls and lead them to Jesus in their lives. It does not remember if you remember my name at all. I honor your profession and glad you are teaching the good words of the Bible. I love that old time religion and names are no meaning of great worth to me. Just call me anything and I'll answer.

Larry, I do understand, one thing I have tried and sometimes works is that I'll tell the person I'm talking to that if they remember anything about me at all, they will remember that I have a bad memory, so lets just pretend we are meeting for the first time. It is not a full-proof plan, but it has worked.

Cheers and good luck... what's your name again?

Happened a few time to myself, it is embarrassing when your blank stare gets that "you don't remember me...do you?" Yes! you remember the face but you be darn if you can put a name to it, life is a puzzle full of little faces that with the years it's almost impossible to remember the name of each one.

Georg
