when you hear, don't forget to listen

Dogs barking, cats meowing
Lawnmowers crying
Jackhammers pounding
Children screaming,
Moms yelling,
Get out of the street!
Cars zooming
Stereos blasting
Beautiful Saturday Morn!
Next day Sunday, quiet
Church, not quite, they
Did something new and added
 a rock and roll band!
After a while, we were singing normal
Hymns, but a voice behind
me was an awful din.
Like chalk on a blackboard
It cut me like a knife, I prayed to the Lord,
Le this woman learn to sing right!
Church was over.   I didn’t
Know it then, but my life drastically,
was about to change.
In front of me a man was blocking
My path. I asked him nicely
Sir, you are in my way.
He just ignored me, I thought
How rude!   I tapped him on the
 shoulder and yelled again,
Please get out of my way!
He turned around and looked at me, and
I hung my head in shame. He wasn’t being rude
he never heard what I said. He looked at me with a smile on his
face, he said “I am so sorry dear, I’m afraid I can’t hear.
For as you can see; I am quite deaf. The only way
I can hear is to read someone’s lips. But tell me
Dear, didn’t you think the sermon was lovely today?
I realized I didn’t hear what the preacher had said.
I was too busy worrying about the noise again. And
once more I hung my head in shame. I looked straight
at him, so he could read my lips, “No sir, I didn’t hear it today”
He looked at me with a question mark on his face, what
he said next wasn’t meant to be unkind; but was a slap in the face.
This man whose world had been silenced forever, looked
at me with a sorrowful glace. “Dear, you have a precious gift,
unlike me, you are fortunate to hear all sorts of things. So take
a word from the wise:
Hearing means nothing if you haven’t learned to listen.

As a deaf person, I find the deaf man in your poem a bit rude. Though it is true that those who hear may not listen or those who can see are often truly blind, any of us---disabled or not---may 'block' whomever we wish, whenever we want. Some are still blocking God ... :)!

No cockroaches in church? Remind me to tell you about the mice in church!

Love this,
Sandy

Mary,
I'm glad I came into your page today. This is a powerful message. We all need to count our blessings more and take nothing for granted. I can walk, talk, and HEAR and I thank my Lord for it all. So many don't even have a home to go too, I don't have alot of money, but I am blessed that God has given me eyes, ears, and legs to walk. God bless you for writing this.

Many blessings,
~Linda

Wow what a lesson to learn. Being hard of hearing myself, even with two hearing aids, I miss a lot what the Pastor says in his homily, so hearing is a wonderful gift and should be treasured.

I'd say wise indeed. Beautiful touching write. We take our gifts for granted and this is a good example of that. What good are our ears if we truly don't listen. Love and hugs, Bonnie
