Keys to Yesterday

Two peoples thirst for their ancestry.

For Susan

Two strangers thirsting for knowledge
Using modern technology as their tool
Reaching into yesterday for answers
 unknown.

Both diligently searching for their kin,
Discouragement was settling in as
Their quest was becoming quite dim.

One day it happened, two unknowns
An accidental fall in the Internet, and that’s
Where it all began. Not complex, an easy
Thing, and it all started with just one name.

Though it was an unusual one, they shared it
just the same. And although they were invisible
to each other, the key to the past was about to
be unlocked. all because of one surname.

They wrote to each other and showed what little
They had found.  But when two work together,
helping each other, the minuteness of their stories grew by leaps and bounds.

An Eastern European country was where there
Families hailed. A small village of Glogowatz
Hungary, is where it all began.

Tyrants were taking over their land, they knew
The time had come to flee. In the midst of the night through salty tears, they looked at the land they loved, and wondered what America would be.

The two women shared this tale, and even
reading it, they were in tears. For what was
it like to leave a  home you’ve always loved
to forge a new frontier.

Many branches fall off a family tree, treasures unopened, things you’ll never see. And the new found cousins continued their search, for the quest for one’s family is an infinite thing.

our origins and family always hold a special fascination -- it is the bond that ties us to the larger family of man -- for "who we are is where we were when",(Morris Massey) -- research into family is fascinating and frustrating at the same time -- peace and love my friend -- Jon Michael

The search for our routes I believe is as inbred as the desire to survive, for how can we get to where we are going if we don't know where we've been...Great write Mary

Amazing what the Internet can lead us to. One of my daughters found me on the Internet, and as a matter of fact she found me right here on AD. I hadn't seen Patricia in thirty-eight years. Yep, that's 38 years. So, I can relate maybe a little more than most can.

Your poem says it so well .... how could I not like it as I am one of those people you have connected with. Salty tears .... gives a tender and emotional picture to the way they must have felt ... especially if they felt they would never see their homeland ever again. You experienced a similar thing when your family moved to Arizona ... but perhaps you were too young to understand it's significance and how that move added to the journey started so far away and so long ago in Glogowatz. Take care. Happy Glogowatzing!
Susan
