Bad Habit
By: Sheri C. Uy
01/07/2008

In the morning when you wake up
First thing you do is reach out and hold me
Your gentle fingers caress my body
Your sleepy eyes lovingly look at me
Then you slowly take me to your lips
And smell me with the warmest of breaths
You ignite me in a single flick
In those familiar lips I surrender myself
Between your fingers my life I freely give

The time has come for the smoldering light
To be put out, away from sight
As daybreak finally chased the night
I lay here, alone, ravished and quiet

In silence, I ponder:

Why does everyone want to touch me?
Why do they love to drag the life out of me?
Why do they burn my white body?
Then crush and throw me away?

After all, I’m just a cigarette!

Author's Note:
(Sincerely, no offense meant for the smokers!)

Well as an ex smoker I loved this one and yes I can see the silly side of this but also a sad truth, my smokes were the last thing I had at night, what I reached for when I couldn't sleep, and the first thing I had when I awoke in the morning. Never noticed till this poem the analogy of cigarettes and lovers. lol

Sheri,

Even though you made smoking a cigarette sound so sensual, I'll pass. No wonder smokers breath so heavily. (lol) Peace, Love and Blessings Always, Paul.

Sheri,

As a smoker, no offense taken. It's a habit, in answer to your title. A bad one, one I wish I'd never started. Too hard to quit...

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.

EXCELLENT pen, saving this one.

Loved this...I quit in 1993 but I still recall that first cigarette, oh and the one that you had to have with the first cup of coffee, and the one that you needed right after lunch, the one when you got in the car and the one when you talk on the phone...a hard habit to quit, I must say the hardest thing I've ever done! You've nailed this one with excellence...enjoyed!
Blessings,
