For my Grandfather...

The streets have dried with yesterday
In my hometown

The taverns and pool halls have lost their play
In my hometown

Once fishnets dried and dry docks thrived
In my hometown

Oyster beds were king and the gulls could sing
In my hometown

Now all have surrendered their decades old splendor
to government liquor and welfare signs
In my hometown

The shake mills have closed
In my hometown

The glorious forests have turned to seed
and the cannery row no longer bleeds
In my hometown

So much has changed, yet all stays the same
In my hometown

Hello:

So much passion and splendor in these words.
Really, a beautifully written compasionate poem.
We need some good, honest, passionate lawyers - especially in
Texas.
I just looked down and saw Robert's (Jude(Ace)) reply ...
Litle really changes when so much is moving on ... unless we change them ...
Peace, love, much success Ms. Moore ...
PS - don't go into civil rights law!
Its a pig that won't eat!
Did you read my articles on civil rights - Black Dust?
Show them your law student friends and professors!

Change is good, but it is sometimes sad. Those changes happen so slowly we don't notice them until all at once. And we say, "how did things change so fast?" But they didn't. And part of us regrets not being part of those changes.

Lori, the repitition of that line made this fine write sensory, as well as visual... there's a definite feel for the desolate, the forgotten... what I think of as an "experience poem".. I could see it. Well done... it lingers... katy xox.

I'm amazed to go back to some of the places I lived as a child and see how things have changed.

It's so sad yet true, but somehow 'all stays
the same.' Profound and powerful piece!

Happening to far too many good old towns these days - another sign of our often 'too modern' times.

I wish I could go back to my hometown (Hong Kong) to where I was living with my grandparents when I was 1 'til I was 6. I'm sure the buildings have changed, and the people who are living there have changed...

but in my memory I'm always there with my grandma and grandpa.

Lovely write indeed, Lori. Your repetition of "In my hometown" in this poem serve as a series of memory flashbacks. Nicely-done!
