As morning rays brooded through the tress
both dust and dew danced,
glistening with newness
The gathering lowered their heads
bowing, without question
Goodbye came easy to those
who understood the hunt
The doe was silent…
Spotted fawn, gray squirrel,
skunk, rabbit and jays
having said their goodbyes
silently blended
into the cover that had betrayed her
Knowing that they too may die…

This needs a bit of revision to include the idea that here in CA, shooting a doe is rarely legal. Unlike some states, there is never a doe season. One idea I had hoped to express in the poem was the idea of an errant shot. One that killed an animal which could not legally be taken. Therefore, she was left. A wasted life... along with the metaphor... Oh well, it seems most take this as a Bambi poem or perhaps an anti hunting write. Neither of which were my true intention. Thanks again. LLM
Lori, I answered this earlier but my computer froze up before I pressed post. It is a superb poem and makes you think about the rights of the animals! I hate to say it but I used to go quail hunting! Not anymore though! Whew! This poem brought up a lot of emotion in me! Very powerful! Thanks for the review!

Life should never be wasted.I understand. We use to have this collector of bugs and insects come to the mountain. Oh ,how I wanted to learn from him till I saw how he got his speciemens. He turned this bright light on and attractd them to this net then he put them in some lind of liquid and they died.I collect insects and bugs too and put them on little gardens I make but they habve already departed when I take them. Sort of a second life of beauty . I loved your poem.
Wonderful write Lori! I always don't understand why people would hunt just for the fun of hunting and killing.
One friend at work who lives in a farm told me that her boyfriend had hunted down a bear with bow and arrow, and I thought that was even crueler than using rifles. With bow and an arrow, if he misses the heart, the poor bear must have been suffering in pain for a long time before it's death. I was almost sicken with disgust when I heard that. She told me that her boyfriend took the bear home, and then... (I couldn't even write that in here).
Well, I guess by now they must have that bear head on the wall to show off for a hunting trophy. - Guess this was their reason for killing.
It always saddens me when an amimal falls this way, I guess I saw too much of it growing up, so this was a really heartrenching write Lori, well done.

Ahhhh, Bambi's mom, I still remember as a child, wondering why men hunt innocent animals(unless it was for food). I swore then, at age five, never to hunt anything that couldn't shoot at me first.
This was a wonderful poem, very well done...

This poem deals with the finiteness of life, yet the infinity of living in fineteness...I like the flow and compactness of the thoughts in this well crafted work...BRAVA!
