This is not directed to anyone here at the den, at least not on my behalf. It was written somewhat tongue in cheek after reading some crits at another site and seeing how some of the authors were treated. Another first draft.

It is so cliché to reject the familiar,
as though you yourself have original thoughts.
Your superman pen is anemic within
the arena where word games are fought.

A wordy response reveals the fool
who sets on the other side.
A small nit in your crit is all I need
to send you out with the tide.

Assonance, for assonance sake,
makes no sense to me.
Enjambed lines and slanted rhymes
are worthless if passion free.

Yes, you’ve perfected style
but lost the heart
of passionate poetry.
You’re wise in your eyes
but dismissed by the rest
It’s very plain to see

Caught the critic in its own web I see. Sometimes I want to write, "I don't like this." or "You have a lot of emotion, but don't write it well." I've learned, at least on AD, that that kind of honesty is taken far too personally. My novel Alone? was inaccurately critiqued (no typos in the final version) by one critic and panned (not his style-he likes horror and action, character development) by another. You have to have a thick skin to be a writer.

This one touched me close to home. I know what it means to be critiziced, meanly, in your art, your gifts. Constructive critiques I can handle but downright gutter remarks kind of scorches. You are very observant, thanks for sharing this with us.

The point of poetry is self-expression. The words are meaningless is just simply thrown together to force a rhyme. Poetry comes from within, and the emotion will burst forth like a fountain if the words are written in that way. Sadly, I too have seen too many narrow minded people who refuse to see that way. There are no rules to poetry. One must write what one feels, what one is driven by, what one truly sees.

Excellently put Lori

Dear heart, you can see the support you have received, mine included. Just write and do not worry about the others. Either
you strengthen through adversity or fall by the wayside. Hand in there and keep being who you are; a sweet, wonderful poetess of our

When I started writing poem, I have received sevior critique...some terrible vitriolic comments...most of the time I used to win to myself saying, a poem is like a 500 line MONTE CARLO/MOLECULAR DYNAMICS simulation code...and polishing it by someone else other than poet is like DEBUGGING SUCH A PROGRAM!!! I am sure it is next to impossible for anybody!!! I could defend me, and make them look fools with my SMALL JOKES!!!

Gradually I understood, how important it is to communicate properly, as Bill and others have so honestly told me...At times I have found wonderful comments, some were helpful indeed!!!I have gradually understood the value of reviewing...CRITIQUING IS LOT MORE SUBJECTIVE AND OBJECTIVE...and I dont think many people have time to give honest crits...A review can be an honest reaction of reader...and doesnt need the reader/reviewer to be an excellent to have the knowledge of poetic structures and forms!!! and VICE VERSA!!!!! I BET!!!

I have seen people writing KNEE JERKING COMMENTS...and try to say that they are constructive critiques...THEY EVEN GO ON TO WRITE ON THEIR HOMEPAGES THAT THEY ARE CONSTRUCTIVE CRITIQUES and they respect honesty...

I categorise reviews in four categories:

1) CRITIQUES(VERY RARE, not seen at AD at all, I am CANDID!)
2) Detailed reviews, with positive and negative points:at times reviewers are blunt..Some good examples: Richard Vallance, Robert Jude, Andre, Tyler Wiseman, Robin Hislop, Marie Wadsworth..
3) Some are personal reactions, feelings...good/bad///
4) Some are purely KNEE JERKING COMMENTS, e.g.,GOTCHA, "what happened, we were expecting a mountain!!" "or Does it mean all geniuses think alike!!" or "I can see you can comeback so strongly" or "....hmmmm strangely I have ended a poem with same lines"...

I beg your pardon if I said way too long...

Shakes as he writes, crap write..lol darn I just could not resist..LOL

This is full of wisdom.

Funny I was saying something similar, there are people on other sites, before I found here, who , have more writing qualifications than al the spellling and gramatical errors i write, but I like kate, have no quals, and started about 18 month back.

I can only write as i feel, don't know about you, but my writes I never think about, I just hear something and write it, or think then write.

And do it for fun fun fun.

lovely one..

This puts fear into MY heart, Lori!! I have only been writing a few months and JUST LOVE IT - the writing and reviewing side. And on the strength of my enthusiasm and perceived "potential" (??!!) I have been accepted on a Creative Writing course which is known to be highly competitive. I have no English BA, am terribly badly read and could not honestly say that I would spot a sonnet if I saw one!! All I have is my passion, and just an uneducated free-style. I am dreading being totally laughed out of court by the academic types who I know will also be participating...Yikes! But, if it's a willingness to learn and excel at what I DO have, then it will be a level-playing field...I hope!! Thank you for this... your message that it IS the heart and passion that count and the endorsement of the comments below gives me courage.... Kate xx

As poets we must accept our most subtle differences
Without deceit or prejudice or childish pretenses
And never resort to spite or attack
For what we interpret others may lack
And so by the power we hold so dear
Craft our poems for all to revere (from "The Poetic Code")

i totally agree with the depth of your poem ...
