Piss and shit stained linen
soil what’s left of self esteem.
Death and pine
challenge every breath.

She spends her moments lost in time
void of yesterday.
A single, unending instant
is all that she has left.

Deep inside a shadow,
that shuns her memory,
She waits for a face
she can’t recall yet longs to see.

Drool stains the face
that once shone life’s natural glow.
She doesn’t seem to care,
she doesn’t seem to know.

Dignity died the day her family
left her here to die,
in this confusion some refer to
as retirement’s hard earned rest.

This one is close to my heart, I helped with my Grand Mother at the end, very difficult to find peace in this rest, in a "Home" or at home. Powerful and heart breaking.
I feel your anger and anguish. Well writen!

It sounds as if you've seen this. Let's pray that we don't ever have to experience it. Excellent write about the sad situation some of us experience before death. You wrote the truth well. It's heart wrenching, but it better than abusing the loved one or losing your own sanity. Some old family members are very hard to take care and to live with. It doesn't matter if you love them or not. They are abusive toward those who care about them.

Powerful truths.
I was taught to respect and be kind to the older ones.
Sadly these days, I don't think this is taught anymore.

thank you, Lori, for this write. i love the way you titled it with such a serene concept and then hit hard with the poem's content. this is something that is too easily pushed down the list of "issues" to attend to in the public mind. it out to be at the forefront.

We do it with cans and bottles, so why not with humans? Social dumbing down has taken over our society.

Another extremely sad aspect of our modern throw-away society. Many now toss once treasured articles, pets, and even elderly friends and family members away without a second thought.

A most profound poem and message, Lori. Hope many heed it.

This is one sad situation. I know too many of this for one of my friends' sister is working in the nursing home. Some don't even have visitors. We all got together and make up some nice gift baskets to give to these folks who are forgotten by their families.

I think at least in this way they can feel much better about themselves that someone care enough about them that they send the gift basket.

Just our 2 cents of doing good.

A cruel picture depicted here for the old and the lonely .
However , when we have God in our lives , we are never lonely or old , as we drink from the Fountain of Christ each day !!!

Wonderful and inspiring write Lori .

Lori, the sad visions of this write, breaks my heart. It's so hard to watch somebody we love lose their youth, but to me it's much sadder to watch while they go through it alone, and none of their children stop throughout the day to render them a kind word or a hug.
Truly awesome work Lori! Lisa

A sad reflection of the life of eternal youth and success that we have falsely constructed around ourselves. We have truly lost sight of the sanctity of and respect for human life at both ends of the spectrum - and inbetween, too! Is life so cheap?... to which the answer must be a resounding "No!", but now our own time is more precious to us than the lives of those around us - even our nearest and dearest. I think here in the UK we have lost the plot completely and are entirely in a spiritual and moral desert, consumed instead with materialism. Your so-true words here expose our utter degradation when we strip our elderly of the right to respect and the right to life and nurture. In such a climate the door of euthanasia becomes alarmingly appealing to all concerned. How my heart weeps! Thankyou for this hard-hitting and sobering write, Lori. Kate xx

Lori...I agree with Eileen this is a sad situation...I used to be proud in knowing that Asians treat their parents differently, but alas this has also changed...many familys are dropping dear old mum or dad on the doorsteps of new resthomes in China...which is consequently the fastest growing care service in China...now Hong Kong familys are taking the easy way out...sad...excellent poem...I hope this reminds familys that it is all about togetherness...Fletcher B

Oh Lori, how many await this fate? God help those who are abandoned by their families. At home with them the are 'in the way'. If their is a voice crying out in the wilderness today, it is crying out so loud for these people. Maybe some of them are not aware of their surroundings, but many deep inside still know the isolation and abondoment they receive; because someone does not love them enough to help. And some are abandoned while they still have their faculties and wits about themselves. To believe their is justice
somewhere in the universe handed out by a loving God, you have to think all this is written in the book of life and will be atoned for
in the end. God help us all. God help us someway as the world is dragged down into the pits of hell; while thinking they are saved and sanctified. Maybe Jehovahs' Witnesses are right in believing
in only 144,000 reaching Heaven (I think it is them)??? THIS I CAN BELIEVE (IN AN INHERENT EVILNESS IN MANKIND) Billions will be called by God and billions will fill their hearts with self deceit and there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth! (If we are not our brothers keepers) we are fools. So many of the self-righteous throw stones at their fellow man that they are doomed. Bill Murray
hugs dear sweet heart.
